Dr. Armen Kherlopian, a scientist, investor, and CEO of Covenant Venture Capital, is pushing to bring Starlink to Armenia. But what is Starlink, and why does it matter?

Starlink is a network of satellites that provides internet access. It's run by SpaceX, a well-known American space company. As of March 2024, Starlink has over 6,000 small satellites orbiting Earth, serving 102 countries.

Armenia was supposed to get Starlink in 2024, but now the company's website says it won't arrive until 2025 (https://www.starlink.com/map). However, there's no guarantee it won't be delayed again. Meanwhile, neighboring Georgia already has Starlink.

Dr. Kherlopian and I believe that Starlink is crucial for Armenia. Here's why:

1. Internet Independence: Armenia primarily relies on a single cable for internet. This is risky – if the cable is cut, the whole country could lose internet access. There have been examples of internet outages in Armenia caused by cable cuts, highlighting the fragility of the current infrastructure. Starlink would provide a backup option.
2. Cost vs. Benefit: While Starlink can be expensive, many countries have found ways to use it effectively. For example, they use it for important businesses, security, or share connections to cover larger areas.
3. Better Security: Starlink's satellite network is harder for others to spy on or control compared to traditional internet cables.
4. Urgent Need: Armenia needs Starlink as soon as possible, especially in case of emergencies when other help might be delayed.
5. Call for Action: There is a need for collective effort from various stakeholders to move the needle on this issue. Citizens, businesses, business unions and scientists should push the government to bring Starlink to Armenia faster. Businesses, especially those in defense and those who pay a lot in taxes, should pressure the government to make Starlink a priority.

In short, Starlink is an important tool for Armenia's internet security and independence. So let’s make it happen sooner rather than later.
